The Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT) and Curtin University tasked us with the creation of a Google Chrome extension that would allow them to monitor students during remote online examinations. To achieve this, we leveraged the latest in modern web technology to bundle a web app into a Chrome extension that would activate at the start of each examination.
The extension records video, audio and desktop streams from the student’s computer for the length of their examination. We then used various pattern recognition algorithms to flag suspicious frames which the lecturers could then examine through a dedicated Progressive Web App (PWA) dashboard.
The so called Intelligent Remote Invigilation System (IRIS) has allowed for additional integrity and transparency in remote examination process. Providing the institutions with an edge over their competitors and opening up opportunities for a more accessible and scalable curriculum.
